Welcome Shirley!!

So good to hear from you Shirley!!

Sounds like you have a whirlwind visit to the midwest - I can't wait to catch up with you on Friday.

We celebrated Syd's 91 st birthday on Saturday. Emily and Zach came down for the weekend and they spent the day at the farm with Syd and Steve. I stayed home and pretty much cooked and prepped dinner. We went for a last blast of summer grill with way too much food for dinner. I planned to send leftovers home with Syd, Emily, and Zach.

Emily and Zach made the birthday cake. I was very impressed. They did a triple layer and made their own fondant - very pretty. Linda brought a gooseberry pie and an apple pie so we are covered with desserts this week. So much for dieting.... Emily brought "work" home too. She loves her job at the Chocolate Stam shop in Ames. Apparently they are encouraged to try the chocolates and find their favorites so they can help customers make their choices.

Anyway, dinner was good and then we played croquet - Steve won of course or really the mosquitoes won - we were ready to go inside and eat cake.

This is my favorite cucumber recipe - we have been eating cucumbers daily since Julie sent that email out - In a small bowl combine white wine vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. Using a grater, slice the cucumbers very thin into the bowl. Refridgerate several hours - this gets better with age, but it usually vanishes within a day or two. You don't need to measure anything, you will know when it looks good.

On Sunday, Emily, Zach and I went to Granite City for brunch. Wow, it was crazy good! All kinds of food and all of it was excellent. It was very crowded too. I would definitely go back.

Looking forward to going to Galena!!

Cindy
